Chanticleer returns for its annual San Diego appearance at St. James by-the-Sea. The GRAMMY Award-winning vocal ensemble is known around the world as 'an orchestra of voices,' a phrase that captures both its astonishing vocal range and its clarity of ensemble. Founded in San Francisco in 1978 by singer and musicologist Louis Botto, Chanticleer has become one of the most prolific recording and touring vocal ensembles in the world, with a repertoire spanning Renaissance music, classical works, gospel, jazz, popular song, and new commissions. Their St. James appearances have become a San Diego tradition, equal parts vocal athleticism, musical luxury, and California homecoming.
About the Artists
Chanticleer has sold more than one million recordings and performed thousands of concerts worldwide. Its discography includes GRAMMY-winning recordings of Sir John Tavener's Lamentations & Praises and the commissioned-works collection Colors of Love. The ensemble also maintains ambitious programming in San Francisco, a significant education and outreach program, and a long-standing commitment to commissioning new choral work. With voices ranging from countertenor to bass, Chanticleer occupies a category almost entirely its own: a full-color, all-male vocal ensemble capable of Renaissance transparency, jazz inflection, and contemporary theatricality in the same evening.
