The Choir of Clare College, Cambridge brings one of England's most admired collegiate choral traditions to La Jolla. Founded as a mixed-voice choir in 1972, the ensemble sings regular services in Clare College Chapel while maintaining an international schedule of concerts, recordings, broadcasts, and tours. Under Graham Ross, Director of Music since 2010, the Choir is known for elegant ensemble singing, expressive text, and a repertoire that reaches from Renaissance polyphony to music of our own time. Their return gives San Diego audiences a rare chance to hear the living sound-world of Cambridge chapel music up close, not as a museum piece, but as a young, agile, deeply cultivated choral tradition.
About the Artists
The Choir has recorded extensively, including acclaimed releases on Harmonia Mundi, and has appeared with major ensembles and orchestras including the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, and Orquesta Sinfonia Nacional de Mexico. Their discography ranges from Renaissance and Baroque repertoire to new commissions, including John Tavener's Ex Maria Virgine and major projects under Graham Ross. Former directors include John Rutter and Timothy Brown, placing the current choir within a remarkable lineage of English choral leadership. Clare's particular magic is the fusion of collegiate freshness and professional polish: bright young voices, disciplined ensemble, and a sound shaped by daily chapel singing.
