About The Event

Join us for A Festival of Lessons and Carols, a timeless Christmas tradition that finds its roots in the chapel of King’s College, Cambridge, where it was first sung in 1918 as a way to bring comfort and hope in the aftermath of war. Now cherished around the world, this service tells the story of the long-awaited Messiah through nine scripture readings—or “lessons”—beginning with the disobedience of Adam and Eve in Genesis and culminating in the mystery of the Word made flesh. Each lesson is followed by a carol or choral anthem, creating a sacred dialogue between ancient text and music, darkness and light, prophecy and fulfillment.

The St. James Festival Choir leads this musical journey with beloved Christmas hymns sung by all—“O Come, All Ye Faithful,” “The First Nowell,” “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”—alongside exquisite choral settings both old and new. The liturgy moves from simplicity to splendor, mirroring the story it tells: humble shepherds, angelic choirs, and a newborn child wrapped in cloth and glory. Candlelight fills the church as voices rise in joy, offering a moment of peace and wonder in the midst of the holiday season.

Following the service, all are warmly invited to a festive reception on the church lawn featuring Christmas cookies, hot cider, and mulled wine. Whether you come in quiet reflection or festive anticipation, A Festival of Lessons and Carols offers a space to reconnect with the heart of Christmas—through story, song, and the company of community.
