About The Event
Compline-by-Candlelight is a contemplative offering of ancient beauty at the close of day. Set in the candlelit sanctuary of St. James by-the-Sea, this brief, 30-minute liturgy invites stillness through plainsong, silence, and prayer. Sung entirely by the Schola Cantorum of St. James, the service follows the traditional form of Compline—the final office of the monastic hours—offering sacred space for rest, reflection, and quiet encounter with the divine.
Under the direction of Alex Benestelli, the Schola presents a rich tapestry of sacred music that spans centuries: from the austere simplicity of Gregorian and Anglican Chant to the intricate polyphony of Renaissance masters, and the meditative harmonies of contemporary mystics. Sung unaccompanied and illuminated by candlelight, this music is offered not as performance, but as prayer—drawing the listener into the stillness and mystery of night. No sermon, no announcements—only music, light, and the ancient rhythm of liturgical prayer. Whether you come with faith, doubt, or simply a need for peace, Compline-by-Candlelight is an invitation to exhale and be still.
