About The Event

Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem, Op. 9, will be offered within the context of the Sunday morning liturgy at St. James by-the-Sea, featuring the Choir of St. James and organist Bruce Neswick, directed by Alex Benestelli. Composed in 1947 in the shadow of war and loss, Duruflé’s Requiem is a work of extraordinary depth and tenderness, grounded in the ancient melodies of Gregorian chant and clothed in the rich harmonic language of early 20th-century France. While unmistakably modern in its harmonic palette, the work retains a deep reverence for tradition, echoing the influence of Fauré and the mystical sensibilities of the Impressionist composers. The version for choir and organ, as performed in this liturgical setting, brings a rare intimacy and spiritual immediacy to the work, illuminating its core themes of rest, mercy, and eternal light.

Duruflé avoids dramatic excess in favor of restraint and clarity, creating a musical atmosphere that is meditative rather than mournful, luminous rather than lamenting. The chant-based lines weave through each movement with grace and purpose, carried by the choir and enhanced by the subtle complexity of the organ writing. Far from a concert presentation, this performance unfolds as an act of worship—woven into the rhythm of the liturgy, surrounded by prayer, scripture, and sacrament. Heard on Remembrance Sunday, it becomes a powerful tribute to the departed and a deeply human meditation on loss and hope. The Requiem does not dwell in grief, but instead offers consolation and quiet assurance, inviting the congregation into a space of beauty, remembrance, and sacred stillness.
